Outreach Work Completed 2011

 Primary Health Care Activities on behalf of KPC, RAK Women’s Centre

The following information is a summary of health promotion activities conducted over during June, July and August 2011.

  • 11 village health talks - North Tarawa x 1 and the remaining on South Tarawa, Bonriki, Bairiki, Betio, Antebuka, Eita, Buota, Ambon x3, Temeiku villages.
  • Teaching health education and hygiene for one week of the four week Women’s Skills development course.
  • Health Education as part of the Pre School Teacher training courses x 4 days
  • Encouraging healthy eating, exercise and weight loss program over two months for staff members at KPC HQ.
  • 10 visits to the hospital with approx 30 women to encourage them to have pap smears and receive help for gynecological problems.
  • Quit smoking information distributed to each workplace at KPC HQ, each week, for five weeks to encourage staff to cut down or cease smoking.
  • Discussion with the Moderator and General Secretary about the effects of passive smoking in the office for employees. Also the devastating effects that Bingo is having in the lives of women and their families and questioning whether the church should be promoting this form of fund raising.
  • Arranged for two KPC staff or community members to do the online free certified Quit training program to assist smokers to quit when I have gone home (currently a decision is yet to being made regarding who will undertake this training).
  • Three health screening days with 22 attending the first session, 25 the second session and about 50 for the last session.
  • Support for the student nurse training program by inviting nurses to attend and participate in the last Health Screening morning.
  • Three staff members have been taught some health education skills so that they can continue some of this work within the level of their own competency.
  • Tooth brushes and paste distributed to the Sunday school children with education on how to brush teeth properly.
  • Education about the benefits of brushing teeth and tooth brushes and paste distributed to each participant in the Pre School Training Course in Buorta.
  • 6 long bars of soap to be distributed to the patients at the Mental Hospital
  • Initiated the book The Adventures of Meere and Tion as an injury prevention book for parents to help their children to read.
  • 45 books distributed to the public library at Bairiki and Sunday School teachers at KPC for use by families with young children.
  • Several applications were prepared for the Projects Office to help gain donor funding for RAK.
  • Application for the Host Organisation (KPC HQ) for two projects next year.
